A new handheld device has been designed with the first-time user in mind.

The Market For Handhelds May Be Getting Bigger

(NAPSA)-Consumers may now find it easier-and more economical-to carry the information they need. With an estimated price of $99, a new handheld has hit the market with the first-time user in mind.

Designed to meet the demands of students, families and individuals in business, this device is aimed at those who must juggle endless events and activities.

The device is thought to represent the first major introduction to mainstream consumers at the sub-$100 price point.

The Zire handheld-the name sounds like the word "desire"-features the manufacturer's classic personal information management (PIM) features with an emphasis on value and simplicity.

"The Palm Zire handheld symbolizes the beginning of a new generation of useful tools to simplify our lives," said Todd Bradley, president and chief executive officer of Palm Solutions. "Zire handhelds can replace or augment paper-based organization systems and deliver substantial savings in time and cost."
Entering information on a Zire handheld is easy. A user can write with Palm's simplified alphabet, tap the on-screen keyboard or type information into a computer and then transfer it onto the handheld.

Described as an elegant and sleek device, the new handheld weighs only 3.8 ounces, which is said to make it the lightest Palm handheld on the market.

The handheld comes with a removable flip lid to protect the monochrome display screen while stored. The new two-button design focuses on what is said to matter to first-time users-an address book and date book.

Palm's famous, easy-to-use PIM applications allow users to quickly keep track of important information. Recurring appointments need only be input once. Helpful reminder alarms alert users to meetings or appointments.

Consumers can share information files or applications wirelessly-by infrared-with other handhelds. For example, at some ballparks, museums, retail, theaters and restaurants, information can be beamed directly to the handheld.

This new handheld can store approximately 6,000 addresses, five years of appointments (approximately 3,000 entries) and more. Users can choose from 15,000 downloadable applications from business software to puzzles and games and more. To learn more, visit the Web site www.palm.com/zire.
